作者紹介：レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ（Leonardo da Vinci、本名：Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci、1452年4月15日 - 1519年5月2日）はイタリアのルネサンス期を代表する芸術家で、「万能の天才」の異名で知られる。「万能人（uomo universale）」とも呼ばれ、絵画、彫刻、建築、土木、人体解剖、その他の科学技術に通じ、極めて広い分野に足跡を残している。『最後の晩餐』や『モナ・リザ』などの精巧な絵画は盛期ルネサンスを代表する作品となった。膨大な手稿（ノート）を残しており、その中には飛行機についてのアイデアも含まれていた。
作品紹介：描かれている女性はミラノ公ルドヴィーコ・スフォルツァの愛妾だったチェチーリア・ガッレラーニであるといわれている。また、正確にいえばこの絵画に描かれているのは白貂（シロテン）ではなく、白い被毛を持つフェレットである。ダ・ヴィンチが初めてチェチーリア・ガッレラーニに出会ったのは1484年だった。ミラノにあるルドヴィーコ・スフォルツァの居城スフォルツェスコ城に互いに滞在していたときのことで、当時まだ17歳の若く美しかったチェチーリアはルドヴィーコの愛妾で、楽器を演奏したり詩を書いたりする日々を送っていたのである。

About the artist: Leonardo da Vinci (born Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, 15 April 1452 - 2 May 1519) was the quintessential Renaissance figure of Italy, known by the epithet "universal genius" (uomo universale). He worked across painting, sculpture, architecture, engineering, anatomy and many other sciences, leaving his mark on an extraordinarily wide range of fields. Refined paintings such as The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa stand as representative works of the High Renaissance. He left behind an enormous body of notebooks, among them ideas for flying machines.
About the work: The woman portrayed is generally identified as Cecilia Gallerani, mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. Strictly speaking, the animal is not an ermine (stoat) in its white winter coat but a white-coated ferret. Leonardo first met Cecilia Gallerani in 1484, when both were staying at the Sforza Castle in Milan, the residence of Ludovico Sforza. Cecilia, then only seventeen and strikingly beautiful, was the Duke's mistress and spent her days playing music and writing poetry.
