作者紹介：レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ（Leonardo da Vinci、本名：Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci、1452年4月15日 - 1519年5月2日）はイタリアのルネサンス期を代表する芸術家で、「万能の天才」の異名で知られる。「万能人（uomo universale）」とも呼ばれ、絵画、彫刻、建築、土木、人体解剖、その他の科学技術に通じ、極めて広い分野に足跡を残している。『最後の晩餐』や『モナ・リザ』などの精巧な絵画は盛期ルネサンスを代表する作品となった。膨大な手稿（ノート）を残しており、その中には飛行機についてのアイデアも含まれていた。
作品紹介：ルーヴルの数多い名画の中でも不朽の名作であるこの作品は、1974年に日本で公開され、東京国立博物館の周囲に延々と長蛇の列ができた。モデルはフィレンツェの商人ジョコンダの妻モナ・リザ。レオナルドは4年がかりで取り組み、ついに未完成に終わったとされるが、完成品が極めて少ない彼の絵の中では最も緻密に仕上げられた絵といえる。制作中は楽器を奏で、歌を唄わせ、冗談を言って彼女の気持ちを引き立てたという。彼はこの作品を終の地フランスへ持って行った。

About the artist: Leonardo da Vinci (born Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, 15 April 1452 - 2 May 1519) was the quintessential Renaissance figure of Italy, known by the epithet "universal genius" (uomo universale). He worked across painting, sculpture, architecture, engineering, anatomy and many other sciences, leaving his mark on an extraordinarily wide range of fields. Refined paintings such as The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa stand as representative works of the High Renaissance. He left behind an enormous body of notebooks, among them ideas for flying machines.
About the work: An immortal masterpiece even among the countless paintings of the Louvre, it was shown in Japan in 1974 and drew endless queues around the Tokyo National Museum. The sitter is Lisa Gherardini, wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo. Leonardo worked on it for four years and is said to have left it unfinished, yet among his very few completed paintings it is the most meticulously finished. During the sittings he is said to have had musicians play, singers perform and jesters tell jokes, to keep her spirits up. He eventually took the painting with him to France, where he spent his final years.
